Fission Chips Replays

This isn't the order I flew them - just from the best down (I trashed a few successfuls - far too messy!) They were flown at various stages during the final mission design, so there are some minor differences between them, mainly to my weapons loadout. I also put a short variable delay before takeoff on the Su-27's and F-14's to change the scenario slightly each time you fly it.

I'm not the world's greatest pilot, but I get there in the end.

Fchips1
(This one was flown with the final mission design.)
The best of the bunch. I got a bit lucky with the air/air - got both MiG's from Ichon with the second missile, and towards the end splashed a Flanker head-on with guns only, and he was using missiles. Thought I wouldn't make that one! Also got lucky with missiles on another MiG and a second Flanker. Successful mission was called, but I didn't think I'd hit enough vehicles, so I went back for a couple of strafing runs before heading home.

Fchips2
Splashed a few interceptors, but lost Hornet 2 - he wouldn't break off when I called him, and took a SAM near Ichon. Got the target at one try, with one pesky AAA restricting my attack run.

Fchips3
Fairly average - got the target first try.

Notes

When you are mixing it with interceptors and have enough missiles, fire an AMRAAM as soon as 'in range' is indicated. That puts them on the defensive and gives you more time to get in close for the kill. With a crossing target, give the Sidewinders a bigger lead than the aiming computer suggests. That puts them closer to the projected path of the bogie, and seems to give a much better chance of a hit. Also, it isn't necessary to take out the third AAA at the target. That is, the one beyond the northwestern corner of the plant. If you keep low and pull away from it after bombing, it isn't likely to get you. You'll probably have to take out one of the SAM-6's just south of the plant because the Hog's don't seem to get it easily. See the first replay above for demos.

I do better when I take out the vehicles first, but that is only because I fly on a Mac 7200/90 with a Multiscan 15" and all the detail set to high. Even with 104MB DRAM, 4MB VRAM and optimised extensions, when there is a lot of smoke from the bombing the frame rate drops dramatically and it's hard to get the fine control needed for low level strafing. It was down to about 2 frames/second with 2MB VRAM, so I got another couple of VRAM DIMM's a few days ago - much better, although I still lose some of the cockpit graphics at times. Oh, for a graphics card (or a G3)! Mind you, the 7200/90 copes pretty well considering it is getting old now . . . bit like me really!

I think this is my best mission yet, with some unexpected surprises to keep you busy. It is possible to avoid most of the AAA at the target if you keep very low and fast, but I wouldn't like to do it too often without taking out at least 2 of them first. And if you're lucky there will still be a few interceptors around after you hit the target to give a bit more air/air practice on the way home.
